Tips for online donating this holiday season

'Tis the season for giving online.

Charity has become more convenient thanks to the Internet. Donations can be made online by credit cards, cheques, or by telephone. Online donations are possible at any time of any day indefinitely (until the website shuts down). There is no call-waiting; a form only needs to be filled out in order to join their membership and to donate.

Be weary of online charity Websites because many exist out there on the Web. Only trust in those names you know and read press releases about them. For example, WWF is one of the largest environmental organizations.

"We have over 50,000 donors from coast to coast (in Canada)," said Stephen Johnson, director of communications at WWF Canada (www.wwfcanada.org). Last year, Canadians donated $12,164,000.

Issues found on the Web
There are issues other than the environment that can be searched on the net. Such topics include abuse and addiction (www.concerns.ca), homelessness (www.yws.on.ca), human rights (www.amnesty.ca) and diseases like AIDS (www.aaaw.org) and Lung Cancer (www.on.lung.ca) that are so simple to avoid with proper education and awareness.

If you cannot decide, go to www.charity.ca and click on the Donate button on the menubar to search for charities. Whatever you do, always support a charity that relates to you. And do not be afraid to donate because your charitable act is tax-free.

Any fraudulent organizations can be reported to the Government of Ontario (1-800-267-8097). To learn more about charity frauds, visit www.nsi.org/tips/scams.html.
